An Overview On
Wagons can be great for children to transport toys or for adults to transport both children and toys. Many wagons will allow children to intrepidly pull their own toys and supplies out to a picnic or beach trip, while allowing adults to tow a toddler back to the car afterwards safely and with minimal strain. However, not all wagons are created equal, and many wagons are not suitable for both uses.
Wagons specifically intended to transport children (as opposed to wagons meant to transport a variety of items, sometimes including children) should have seatbelts to prevent kids from falling out as they shift in their seats or as the terrain gets bumpy. Since wagons are inherently made for pulling, this safety feature is important as you will primarily be facing away from your child as you tow them.
Wheels also come in varying sizes and materials, but the most durable wheels may not be the best choice for every use or terrain. Rigid plastic wheels are quieter than metal ones, but can be uncomfortably bumpy on concrete or gravel. Sand and soil are best handled by rubber wheels, especially inflated rubber tires.
The Buying Guide
- Wagons which can collapse or fold for storage will be inherently less sturdy than solid-construction options: more hinges and joints means more potential failure points. However, collapsible wagons can be a great choice for trips or when storage space is a concern.
- Plastic toys should always be BPA-free.
- Metal toys that will be outdoors should have a rust-proof coating.
