Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

This camera takes great-quality photos. In portraits, the camera gives a glossy tone to skin and hair; in landscapes or still-lives, the colors look vibrant. Its close-up lens was also effective.
Users who simply want to shoot and not worry about settings will love this camera. It’s sturdy, simple and fun. Like the Mini 8, it mixes simplicity with a set of features to get you by in all shooting conditions. This time around it also comes with a nice range of inclusions to take your selfie game to the next level.
Simple to use, kids just press the big buttons to point and shoot for photos, making it one of the best instant cameras for kids. Features include a macro lens for close-ups, a high-key mode for dramatic effects and a built-in selfie mirror.
You can adjust for your settings a bit using the light dial on the lens. That way, you can make sure you’re getting the best flash possible for your situation, whether you’re outside or in a dark room.
If you’re not seeking high dynamic range and sharp detail from the family barbecue party pics, the Mini 9 is smaller and more fun to pass around, and its results will be good enough to commemorate such casual occasions. Both the camera and film refills (about 60¢ per shot compared with about 85¢ per shot) are less expensive than with our top pick.
Setup is very simple, only requiring the installation of 2 x AA batteries and a film cartridge.

What reviewers didn't like

The instant film for this camera, on the other hand, is very expensive. A 20-pack of Instax Mini film (with white borders; other colors and patterns are also available) costs around $18.
Fuji has missed an opportunity to make other small enhancements that would have made this camera really standout and deserving of a whole new model. I would have like to see an improved lens, a slightly smaller body or just something different enough to make it a proper update.
Comes with a “selfie mirror” which is less of a mirror and more of a tiny square of reflective material. I suppose you can use it to make sure you’re somewhat in frame, but it really isn’t all that helpful when it came to selfies and I wouldn’t rely on it.
Aren’t the best you’ll get out of the cameras we tested, and the camera itself doesn’t offer as many creative options as the Instax Square SQ6.
The styling of the Mini 9 makes it a bit on the bulky side.
