An Overview On
The three main kinds of jean fits are skinny, straight, and relaxed, but each has different subcategories. Straight-leg jeans can be classic or fashion, with curvy options as well.
Traditional styles have clean lines and five-pocket designs and, like other fits, are sold in various colors. They can become more fashionable when they have fancy buttons, embroidery on the back pockets, front seams and bling. Some have button or zipper openings, while others only have buttons; the latter take longer to put on and take off.
The straight-leg jean fit is tailored and streamlined with the same width from the knee to the bottom leg openings, and curvy versions may offer more width through the hips and thighs. They can be mid-waist or high-waisted, and you won’t see straight-leg jeans with waistlines far below the belly button. Straight-leg jeans can also have Spandex, polyester or elastane to give them more stretch to hug the body comfortably and flatter the figure.
Looser and skin-tight jeans are also popular but don’t look as good on as many body types as straight-leg varieties do. Baggy jeans can make the wearer look heavier, while skinny jeans show all the bumps and bulges. It’s easier to tuck a shirt into straight-leg jeans; these are probably the most versatile pants out of the three categories. There’s no excess fabric to worry about either, and they also look better with belts than with loose and tight jeans.
If you find a really flattering fit, go ahead and buy several pairs in different colors. You can dress up or down in dark navy or black, while medium blues are suitable for everyday wear. Brands also offer different finishes, like distressed, shiny and matte.
The best-known denim brands are Levi’s, Lee, Guess, Lucky and Wrangler; higher-end brands like Acne Studios, AG and Mavi cost a lot more and don’t necessarily fit better. It’s not easy to find the perfect fit, so don’t be too disappointed if your first choice isn’t the right one.
The Buying Guide
- Look for a size chart in the product description, and measure yourself before ordering. A size 10/U.S. size 30 is one of the most common, with an approximately 31 to 32-inch waist and 41 to 42-inch hip.
- A size 12 by one brand can fit fine, but another manufacturer’s version can be too tight. Don’t take it personally since sizing can be all over the place.
- Don’t buy jeans that are too tight because they can shrink in the wash.
- Air dry jeans and then toss them in the dryer on the air cycle to fluff them up.
- When trying on jeans, walk around in them and try sitting for a few minutes. Too tight? Go up a size.
- High-rise jeans elongate the legs.
- Check the jeans’ inseam measurement because some are ankle length and others are longer.
