Candle smells AMAZING. Bought this as a gift but love the scent so much I want to buy one for myself.
- New York Mag
Each jumbo-sized candle burns between 60 and 80 hours, chock full of special, curated smells that represent many of these United States.
- Mashable
Their scents are created from real ingredients, and their website says that even their glass containers are made from 100% food grade quality and can be repurposed after being thoroughly washed.
- Reviewopedia
It came in a nice little gift box and in a nice glass jar. As soon as I opened the box I knew it smelled like Seattle! It showcases pine needles, lemon, cedar, coffee, rhubarb and a musty finish to tie it together. It smells like rain, coffee and flowers to me and I just love it! It only has one wick but it burns evenly and allows the amazing aromas to engulf your home! I adore this candle and could not be happier with it. It is supposed to last between 60 and 80 hours so I know I will get to enjoy it for a long time!
- Tiffany & Stephanie Reviews
Homesick candles serve more than one purpose at the same time. This makes them the ideal candles to use while away from home. They will provide lighting, produce the custom scent that takes care of your homesickness, and can also be used as an interior décor accessory.
- The Gadget Reviews
Each candle is 100 percent made in the U.S.A. from all-natural soy wax. They burn from 60-80 hours and they’re hand poured and shipped in less than a week.
- The Manual
What experts didn't like
In all honesty, it’s a great idea but NOT worth the risk in trying. Why? Not only am I out the $10 I paid in shipping to receive the candles, I now have to pay to have them shipped back. So, I’ve lost $15+, plus damaged my smelling capabilities and a few brain cells.
- The Bite Me Chronicles
December 8, 2016 | Full review
The company hasn't gotten around to finding the perfect scents for every state.
- Mashable
Though there website says that the traditional retail price of these candles is $34.95, it appears as though the price has been lowered to $29.95. It is unclear how long this lowered price will last, and the website does say that customers that need their products shipped to Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York will be charged sales tax.

From The Manufacturer

Homesick offers specialized candles that tap into your sensory memory through nostalgic scents that can remind you of the place where you grew up. Homesick's scents capture the most specific of nostalgia — making them the MVP of thoughtful gifting. The concept of these candles is genius: For each state, Homesick distilled its signature smells into a nostalgic blend. Michigan calls on tart cherries and rich chocolate, paying tribute to summer on the Great Lakes through honeysuckle, rose, and cinnamon. There's no place like home when it comes to this scented candle line. Homesick candles are made to evoke memories like mom's sugar cookies or weekend's camping. A comforting candle or fragrance oil with home-related scents (i.e. a Chicago candle smells like chocolate and Great Lake air), because it'll be like being back in your hometown, minus the awkward high school run-ins.

An Overview On Scented Candles

People have been using candles for over 5,000 years. While they are no longer used predominantly for lighting the way, their relaxing and atmospheric qualities are what people love best these days.

Scented candles can help you find a sense of calm and tranquility. Some scents actually provide mood-altering effects. For example, lavender helps to relieve stress, while eucalyptus is energizing and also known to enable people to improve their focus. On the other hand, lemon-scented candles help to reduce anxiety and depression.

However, it’s not only the scent of the candle that’s evocative. If it was, then you’d be able to get the same effects with an air freshener. The flicker of candlelight is hard to reproduce. The glow from a candle creates a sense of warmth and intimacy you can’t get anywhere else. In fact, their healing properties are often used by massage therapists or spa workers to create a sense of peace and tranquility in their surroundings.

The way scented candles look is important for creating the perfect atmosphere. They add the right decorative touch to many areas of the home, from bedrooms to bathrooms, living rooms to kitchens. You can select the color of the wax and the style of the jar or candle holder to match your home’s look and feel.

The act of lighting a candle is therapeutic for many people. In some meditation practices and prayer rituals, lighting a candle takes a front seat. Certain visualization exercises or techniques actually involve focusing on the flickering flame or inhaling the scent of the candle for an extended period of time.

Scents are known to be tied to memory. For many people, lighting a scented candle is a way to remember a particular moment in time or a person no longer there. While floral and herbal scents are common, many scented candles come in unique fragrances such as tobacco or laundry detergent, to evoke specific memories tied to those scents.

DYWM Fun Fact

Did you know that scented candles have their own lingo? Tunneling refers to what happens to your candle when it burns for too short a time and the wax doesn’t get a chance to melt all the way to the edge. As a result, when you burn it the next time, it only burns in the middle and creates a tunnel of un-melted wax around the jar.

You may also hear the term cold scent throw. This is what the candle smells like before you light the wick. Hot scent throw, as the name suggests, refers to what the candle smells like when it’s burning. In some candles, these two scents can be quite different.

The Scented Candle Buying Guide

  • The most important factor to consider when choosing a scented candle is the fragrance. The scent changes the ambiance of your surroundings and can affect your mood and the way you feel. Our Own Candle Company’s Smell My Nuts has a combination of three unique scents: Banana nut bread, toasted coconut and hazelnut. On the other hand, Lulu Candles’ Lemongrass candle has a citrusy smell. Chesapeake Bay’s Balance + Harmony Candle combines floral notes with the fruity smells of pear and peach. NEST’s Classic Bamboo Scented Candle brings together the fragrances of flowering bamboo and citrus.
  • The presentation of the candle is important for setting the scene, especially if you’re trying to match the candle to your existing décor. Our Own Candle Company’s Smell My Nuts comes in a glass mason jar with a lid. The color of the candle matches the banana nut bread scent. Lulu Candles’ Lemongrass is a creamy white candle in a crisp clear jar with a black lid and an industrial-looking label. Chesapeake Bay’s Balance + Harmony Candle is in a soft frosted green jar with a brown lid. NEST’s Classic Bamboo Scented Candle is in a cream patterned jar, without a lid.
  • When considering which scented candle to buy, pay attention to the burn time, which indicates how long the candle can burn before it runs out. Our Own Candle Company’s Smell My Nuts has a long burn time of 100 hours. Lulu Candles’ Lemongrass has a long-lasting and slow burn, but doesn’t indicate the number of hours. Chesapeake Bay’s Balance + Harmony Candle has a burn time of 50 hours, while NEST’s Classic Bamboo Scented Candle has a burn time of between 50 and 60 hours.
  • Price can be a critical factor, especially if you purchase multiple candles for your home. You’re sure to find a candle that fits your budget, however.
