A top choice for it's easy weight adjustments and an innovative dial system for customized workout.
- BestReviews
The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells accept adjustments in increments of 2½ pounds for the first 25 pounds (and 5 pounds after that), allowing a smaller progression than our pick’s static 5-pound increment.
- New York Times Wirecutter
They can switch from five pounds to 52.5 with just the turn of a large dial on the side. When you've turned the dial to the intended weight, the dumbbell will "lock" into place so you can pick it up off the stand with only the correct plates attached, leaving the remaining plates on the stand.

- MMA Life
They don't take up a lot of space.
- Healthy Home Lifting
It has ompact weight set. It’s a huge space saver when compared to a full set of individual weights. Very little space is required to store the Sellecttech 552. Compared to a full set of dumbbells the space required is far less with Bowflex.
- X Boom Fitness
The dock works great, the weight change is easy and smooth, and they take up minimal space.
- List Outdoor

The weight plates are coated with a durable molding, which prevents the dumbbells from scuffing floors and makes the dumbbells quieter (although, slightly less durable) than metal models.
- Dr. Body Gadget
It is easy and simple to change weight resistance.
- Top 10 Great
The SelectTechs have a really great design. Being able to adjust the weight of the dumbbells in 2.5 lb increments by simply turn a plastic dial at each end of the bar is very very clever. It means that with two dumbbells, you replace a large number of fixed dumbbells (e.g., hex dumbbells) or a huge amount of the weight plates that accompany traditional adjustable dumbbells.

The plates are sure not to slip because they are held in place with quality locks made of metal, which lowers the risk of injuries associated with low-quality adjustable dumbbell sets. They are held firmly in your hands with their ergonomic grips, which gives the assurance of maximum comfort even when used for numerous types of exercise.

What experts didn't like
There's a bit of learning curve for those who are used to traditional dumbbells.
- BestReviews
The 15¾-inch-long bars don’t get shorter as you change the weight, making this set a bit harder to handle, especially for smaller-framed people.
- New York Times Wirecutter
Due to size and weight, they're not the best travel companions.
- Business Insider
February 19, 2019 | Full review
However, I did have a slight issue with the length. Each dumbbell is nearly 16 inches long, and because of Bowflex’s bracket-style weight design, the overall length of the dumbbell doesn’t change with the amount of weight you have attached. This means that no matter what weight you have selected, whether it’s 10 lbs or 50 lbs, the dumbbell will always be 16 inches long.
- Home Gymr
Some users report dials need replaced after 1-2 years.
- Fit Rated
For serious bodybuilders, these dumbbells may not be enough. With only a 52.5 pound weight setting, some weightlifters may want to get a heavier set of dumbbells to maintain their current level of fitness.
- 10 Machines
A problem that gets annoying with the Bowflex dumbbells is when its dial system jams due to misalignment between the weight plates and the handle. These occurrences can be disruptive to your workouts, especially if your workout routine only allows for short rest time or you are following along to a fitness video.
- MMA Life
The size of the dumbbells might be something that some people have to get used to
- Healthy Home Lifting
Although 15 different weight settings are available, the 552 system taps out at 52.5 pounds per side.
- X Boom Fitness
Expandability isn’t there.
- List Outdoor
At 16 inches long, these dumbbells may be cumbersome for some users. The efficacy of most exercises is not influenced by dumbbell length; however, users buying these dumbbells specifically for P90X exercises should be aware that the longer length does affect the general comfort of some P90X-specific exercises.
- ratingle
The metal plates might clang together while you’re working out.
- Homethods
The discs which sustain the weight plates may break if the dumbbells are dropped or thrown.
- Best Fitness Equipment
It is not expandable beyond 52lbs. for people who lift more weights than the rest 90%.
- Easy Stay Fit
With its 2.5lb. increment weight adjustments, it is not ideal for users working out at a high-intensity.
- Wear Action
One downside is that this model can only be adjusted up to 52.5 pounds. Beginner and intermediate level users will likely find the range of weight challenging and more than enough.
- Smart Monkey Fitness

- Garage Gym Power
As mentioned weight range will be suitable for beginner and professional but the limitation that it cannot be expandable beyond 52.5 lbs.

- Top 10 Great
The clips that hold the weights onto the handle are a touch fragile, and if they get damaged and break then the weight plates will fall off, sometimes without warning. You don’t want to be holding these above your head when that happens. Yikes!
- The Home Fit Freak

These are made of plastic mostly so the grip can be challenging.
- Gear We Are
Quite a bit more expensive than similar models.
- Much Needed
If dropped too much, the weight brackets are prone to damage.
- Rainy Day Fitness
When mishandled, the plastic pieces can break (although this occurs infrequently)
- Fitness Rocks
Weight brackets are fragile and susceptible to breakage if dropped frequently
- Exercise ACCS
The maximum weight for these dumbbells is 52.5 pounds, which is way too low for many lifters. Even for me, the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells are not heavy enough for me to use for Farmer’s Walks and deadlifts. I have a couple of much heavier hex dumbbells for these heavy exercises.
- Form Me Fit
These dumbells are expensive, there’s no denying that.
- Jaime Is Running
April 3, 2019 | Full review
Stand is sold separately and is expensive ($149). However, you should probably buy it because it is really hard on your lower back to pick up heavy weights from the floor. As a heads up, many reviewers commented that the instructions for the stand are awful and it is very difficult to assemble.
- Product Report Card
Quite fragile, the dumbbell has a lot of plastic and is not designed to be dropped.
- The Best Weight Bench
Maximum weight range which can be achieved on both sides cannot exceed beyond 52.5 lbs.
- Best For Lives

The only problem that happens every so often is that a little bit of shifting can prevent the plates to lock into place but if jiggled a little bit then it will lock back to the right place.
- Escapes With You
The plates do move around a little bit, which can be scary at first.

An Overview On

When it comes to gym equipment, dumbbells are the most versatile. They are an excellent tool for building muscle, and they can be used by almost anyone. Whether you are a novice with a physical limitation or an advanced athlete, adjustable dumbbells can be incorporated into your workout routine. For example, you can use low-weight dumbbells while seated, or add pounds to the dumbbells to use while standing.

Kristin Forte/Simplemost Media

Perhaps the first feature you’ll want to look for when shopping for adjustable dumbbells is shape. While the majority of dumbbells are made up of the traditional wheels with a metal bar in between, there are models with a square or hexagon shape. There are several benefits to each design. For example, the Power Block PowerBlock Elite Dumbbells have a square shape that will rest flat on the ground. That means you’ll be able to do push-ups off of them. Of course, the circular models may feel more comfortable to hold, depending on your preferences.

Next, determine your total goal in pounds for lifting weights. Look for a set of dumbbells that will allow you to work your way up to that specific weight. So if you want to max out at 50 pounds, you don’t want to buy a set of adjustable dumbbells that only offer a total of 40 pounds. Otherwise, you’d never reach your goal, or you’d have to fork over money for a new set of dumbbells.

Kristin Forte/Simplemost Media

While reviewing the total weight, you’ll also need to look for the starting weight and what increments the dumbbell set uses to work you up to your total goal weight. Are there 2.5, 3 or 5-pound increments? Is it easy to add each new weight to the dumbbell? You want to be able to work at your own pace to reach your desired results.

Make sure the set of free weights you’re interested in is made of quality material. It is common to see adjustable dumbbells made of metal, rubber or metal and rubber.

Kristin Forte/Simplemost Media

Consider whether the dumbbells have any special features. The CAP Barbell 40lbs Adjustable Dumbbell has ergonomic grips so your hands don’t slip when you start to work up a sweat. You’ll also want to look for threaded collars that allow for a more secure fit, a finish that prevents rust and corrosion and weights that are compact enough to fit in your storage space.

DYWM Fun Fact

In 1764, Charles Messier discovered a planetary nebula, officially named Messier 27. Since the nebula looked so much like the popular dumbbell exercisers use to lift weights, it got the nickname the “Dumbbell nebula.” According to NASA, you’d need to travel 1,360 light years to reach the Dumbbell nebula, which is located within the Vulpecula constellation.

When it comes to physical dumbbells that are used for weight training, the first model can be traced back over 2,000 years to Greece. In the 5th century BC, the Greeks had a version of the dumbbell that they referred to as halteres. They used this device to perform lunges, abdominal side bends and bicep curls.

It wasn’t until 1846 that dumbbells became commonplace in America. This was all thanks to John Blundell writing and publishing the book, “The Muscles and Their Story.” Fitness buffs took note of how using the dumbbell benefited various muscle groups and began inventing new exercises for the dumbbell to work almost every muscle in the body. Today, fitness trainers may instruct you to complete everything from tricep kickbacks to seated shoulder presses to flat and incline chest presses.

The Adjustable Dumbbells Buying Guide

  • To maintain your free weights and keep them in excellent shape, you’ll need to set them down carefully at the end of each session, instead of throwing them on the floor. Not only is this bad for the dumbbells, but it could potentially damage your floors as well. Equally as important is not banging the free weights together.
  • Cleaning is also essential to your maintenance routine. Simply mix a little dish soap in warm water, and use the solution to wipe down your gear. Afterward, you’ll need to take a clean dry cloth and dry off the dumbbells. If you allow the weights to air dry, they may rust, so don’t skip this step unless your dumbbells are made entirely of rubber.
  • Even though adjustable dumbbells can be used by almost anyone, it is still important to learn the proper form before attempting to exercise with the free weights. You’ll want to check out reputable online videos or consult with a personal trainer to learn the best way to use the equipment so that you don’t pull or injure your muscles in any way.
  • Some adjustable dumbbell models come with expansion kits. For example, the Power Block PowerBlock Elite Dumbbells are up to 50 pounds, but workout enthusiasts who want to push themselves can order the 70- to 90-pound expansion kit without having to purchase a whole new free weights set. This is an excellent option to have if you think anyone in the home may eventually surpass their original goals.
  • Look for the opportunity to connect to the company’s app. Bowflex has a free download that its customers can take advantage of. With the app, you can create a workout, follow workouts that are already downloaded to the app and track your progress in the area of physical fitness.
  • Check to see if the weights come with a warranty. Some models, like the Bowflex SelectTech 552 only have a 2-year warranty. Other models, like the Power Block PowerBlock Elite Dumbbells offer an impressive 10-year warranty. If the model you’re interested in doesn’t have a decent warranty, you may want to consider buying a 2 or 3-year protection plan.
  • The price for adjustable dumbbells varies based on features and the total weight offered. No matter what, you’re sure to find a set that fits your budget.
