Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

Blue Buffalo Wilderness is a grain-free, plant-based dry dog food using a notable amount of named meats as its main sources of animal protein
Blue Wilderness, by the Blue Buffalo Company, is one of the best dog foods I’ve found thus far. Within the first 5 ingredients, we see 3 named meat ingredients, and 2 of those are meat “meals” which only adds to the amount of good protein in this food. They use peas for the main source of carbohydrates and fibre, which is good to see, and this will also boost the protein of the food. They used to use more potato so this is an improvement on their original recipe. Tapioca starch is included as an additional gluten-free source of carbohydrates.
Te food has several fermentation products added to help with digestion. These products are sometimes added if the food contains a lot of fiber in order to help break it down and aid in digestion. Dogs don’t normally need a lot of additional help when digesting simple meats and fats. Fermentaion products have been used for a long time with farm animals but they are relatively new for pet foods.
Blue Buffalo Dog Food makes a quality dog food using natural ingredients in their food plus “Life Source Bits” – these are kibble bits that contain active nutrients and antioxidants that are “cold formed” to keep their nutritional value. Because of this, Blue Buffalo received the highest rating from us.
Plus: - Company states ingredients are USDA inspected, no confirmation provided if ingredients are approved human edible (food grade). - The mineral listings read to be chelated or proteinated (for better mineral absorption). - Contains flaxseed, alfalfa, kelp – health promoting ingredients.
Wilderness takes the natural diet to another level, modelling its recipes on the dietary needs of a wolf, the dog’s wild cousin. By looking at a wolf, Blue believes that they can get in touch with our pet’s evolutionary diet, and meet the needs that nature intended for them. As such, all Wilderness varieties are high protein and grain free, focusing heavily on the meats that go into it as the primary source of nutrition.
Can help soothe itchy, sore skin and uitable for dogs prone to joint diseases. This is a grain-free recipe, so it’s a good choice for dogs allergic to grains. The omega-3 content is high here (1%), so it’s a great choice for long-coated dogs. Omega-3 also has anti-inflammatory properties, so for dogs with itchy, sore skin, this food can have a soothing effect.
Many protein sources, including some uncommon ones like rabbit. Feed alone or mix with kibbie.

What reviewers didn't like

Caramel is a natural coloring agent made by caramelizing carbohydrates. It’s used by pet food manufacturers to impart a golden brown tint to the finished product. However, the concentrated version of this ingredient commonly known as caramel coloring has been more recently considered controversial and found to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
The protein percentage is very good and the fat percentage is acceptable compared to the protein percentage. However, the percentage of fiber is quite high, probably owing to the peas in the food. Some dogs will have problems eating this much fiber in a dog food.
Minus: - This food does include probiotics (friendly bacteria that benefits the intestinal system and in turn the immune system of the pet), however they are not listed in the Guaranteed Analysis (no company guarantee bacteria is viable). - Contains multiple pea ingredients that could cause gastrointestinal issues in some pets. - Contains caramel color; component of this ingredient is linked to cancer. - Contains Sodium Selenite – potential risk form of selenium. - Contains copper sulfate, supplement recently linked to liver disease. - Supplements can be sourced from China; risk of poor quality control. - This pet food lists salt high in the ingredients, contains more salt than some food ingredients
May be too high in protein and fat for less active dogs and not for dogs who don’t like fish.
You'll need to store left overs in the fridge if your dog doesnt eat an entire can at one meal.
