From The Manufacturer

With the Virtuoso, the look goes beyond merely functional. A sculptured metal top and base give this grinder an expensive, elegant image that adds a sense of class and quality to kitchen counters and coffee shop workspaces alike. When you want it all, the Virtuoso is the grinder that will get you there with function, elegance, and style. A convenient front-mounted pulse button allows for grinding directly into an espresso filter basket, while a 60-second timer means that it’s easy to adjust and replicate the ideal grind time. Featuring 40 individual grind settings, from fine to coarse, the Virtuoso has an average grind of 2g/sec. The Virtuoso has an accurate medium to coarse grind for the popular manual brew methods such as Aeropress, Hario V60, and Chemex. 40 mm quality high-carbon steel burrs, engineered in Lichenstein, Europe, consistently produce the quality grind that is going to make the key difference to the taste in your cup. The secret to the Virtuoso’s consistent, smooth grind is two-fold: an efficient DC motor keeps your beans cool, even during extended grind times, while a combination of electric and gear speed reducers slow the burr to 450 RPM, ensuring a smooth bean feed and reducing noise, heat and static buildup. With its small footprint, the Virtuoso fits nicely under most kitchen cabinets. The hopper can hold 10 ounces of whole beans. The quality engineering and build will give you years of grinding pleasure. Additional resources and parts are available as needed to ensure value for your investment.

Expert Reviews

What reviewers liked

Baratza Virtuoso is a nearly identical grinder to the Encore, but it has a slightly speedier burr set, a timer-switch on the side, and a heavier base that helps the grinder stay in calibration.
Can be used for anything from pressurized portafilters to French press.
The Virtuoso has a powerful motor that works together with steel conical burrs to deliver a uniform grind. Whether you're going for fine, coarse, medium-coarse or something else entirely, the Virtuoso will deliver your grounds in a very consistent way.
It has 40 individual grind settings, ranging from fine to coarse and everything in between.
The Baratza Virtuoso was designed with ease of use for the operator in mind and features a simple calibration system similar to that of commercial grinders that eliminate grind variation.

The top hopper can be twisted to adjust between 40 different settings, ranging from fine grounds for espresso to coarse grounds for the French Press.
The Baratza – Virtuoso looks professional with a smaller footprint than other almost pro-level grinders. It is simple and easy to use with a minimalist design and options.
The burr grinding mechanism has been designed to minimize noise and prevent heat build up during the grinding process.
The Virtuoso is a step up in grind quality and case construction as Baratza replaced the plastic front panel with a brushed stainless steel panel.

What reviewers didn't like

While it’s a little more convenient for repeatability to have a timer switch instead of one you flip on and off, that timer is still somewhat vague: there are no numbers or time increments indicated, just different thicknesses of lines.
The timer knob on the side also tends to fall off, with some users noticing it has a loose feel. The lack of any indicators on the timer knob means you’ll have to use trial and error and may waste a bit of coffee before you find your preference.
You can't see inside the catch container for the coffee grounds. The walls are opaque. This might get annoying if you're experimenting with different volumes of coffee beans and aren't sure when the catch container is getting full.
Expensive with a limited warranty
Coffee ground bin shape and location can cause some minor spilling
The Baratza was a high quality product, but didn’t fit the parameters we set for being the best at-home grinder
The higher end Preciso provides 10 micro steps of adjustability in between the 40 primary steps. This will allow an order of magnitude of tuning to produce the perfect espresso shot. Lacking this high-end feature, the Virtuoso will limit your ability to find the perfect grind size for your espresso machine.
