A vast, utterly engrossing story. Best heroes to date. A world that keeps on giving

Odyssey boasts the most extensive map we’ve seen in the history of the series and to say it’s big would be an understatement. It’s massive, sprawling with land masses and vast seas in between.

"Open combat is similar to what we saw in Origins: fast-paced, chaotic battles where locking onto enemies and timing your combos correctly are vital for victory. There are two major changes, though, and both of them help make combat feel much more dynamic."
- Tom's Guide

Massive open world to explore with a lot of sights and surprises to uncover
- Tech Spot
While the sheer volume of content in Odyssey can be extremely overwhelming and, at times intimidating, it is truly a beautiful game which captures the turbulent, superstitious but captivating times of ancient Greece alongside the stealthy action we've come to expect from the Assassin's Creed franchise.

Ancient Greece is a gorgeous place to explore. From sun-drenched cliff sides to dense, red and gold forests, the game provides plenty of eye candy that’s both technically and artistically marvelous. Ubisoft always does it’s homework to bring its environments to life, and Odyssey is no different.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey keeps my attention by delivering a host of stories, fronted by quirky, memorable, believable humans.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey uses color more intelligently than any game in recent memory, imbuing its world with a mixture of earthy tones punctuated by pastel pink leaves and golden sunbeams. Fields of corn stretch over windswept meadows, while aquamarine water laps sanded coastlines. The world encompasses locations as dire as death-billowing volcanoes and sterile marble quarries. It has thriving metropoles packed with open theaters and glittering gold statues.

Its incredible recreation of ancient Greece is something I’ll want to go back to long after I’ve finished its main story, and its excellent systems mesh together in a way that’s hard to beat.

But where Odyssey really shines is in the gameplay department, where its many, many systems tie together to create one cohesive, dense whole.

Ancient Greece is an incredibly detailed and vibrant setting

The thrill of figuring out how to kill a target who is surrounded by dozens of guards still remains. I’m also completely in awe of the depth of the world. It’s absolutely huge, and the level of detail is stunning, especially when you eventually make your way to the larger cities, like Athens.
- The Verge

The best part of Odyssey is just how much it allows players to invest in their interests.
- Game Rant
The best part is that you can recruit anyone you want, so if you fancy having an all-Spartan unit, or re-forming a Peloponessian War version of Achilles’ Myrmidons, you can do so.
- Back 2 Gaming
The real purpose here is to give you a sweeping adventure with lots of beautiful scenery, sea battles, sword fights, sneaky assassinations and tons of character choices. Dialogue options and skill progressions (not to mention that initial gender choice) mold and shape your story playthrough.
- Plugged In

There is so much gorgeous landscape to explore, so many large statues and mountains to climb, that it’s easy to get swept up into a moment of awe when exploring Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

I will say though, while I do have my reservations about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the gameplay is pretty damn fantastic. Getting around is a breeze, and it’s incredibly easy to get lost in being an assassin again. Well, sorta an assassin… but spoilers!

Loading times can be lengthy
- Games Radar

Even though Odyssey’s overall story is enjoyable, its gameplay is dampened by pacing issues. It starts off strong, but as you progress, you spend far too much time outside of main missions trying to level up.
- Digital Trends

"These story lines intersect occasionally, but it's more accurate to say that they compete. Each one demands Alexios' attention, and it's usually unclear which narrative is supposed to take precedence."
- Tom's Guide

Slow pacing that can make playing the already overwhelming campaign a drag
- Tech Spot
However you’ll often be forced to complete conquest battles, which can provide big roadblocks in the adventure as they consist of fighting spongy enemies one after another. It’s always disappointing when you complete a major mission and you still don’t meet the XP cap to get to the next level.

Bugs like these were annoying, sure, but not quite frequent enough to sour me on exploring what has become one of my favorite open-world maps ever.

- GameSpot
October 8, 2018 | Full review
It’s not as deep as Mordor, and at times it can be annoying; the mercenaries often appear at the worst times, tracking you down just as you’re in the midst of a completely different battle
- The Verge

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey gets off to a bit of a slow start with a lengthy tutorial island that introduces the many mechanics and features to players.
- Game Rant
The game is beautiful, but there are a lot of pop-ups here and there, the draw distance also has problems, and there are segments during my play when the game just slowed down.
- Back 2 Gaming
Odyssey attempts to punish you for wanton bloodshed by throwing mercs at you, but they’re more of an annoyance than a challenge, and you’re able to simply pay off your own bounties from the map screen anyway.
