The immersion blender was patented in 1950 by Roger Perrinjaquet as a “bamix.” This was a portmanteau of “batere et mixe,” which means “beats and mixes” in French. He sold his patent to a manufacturer in 1954 who produced their own version of the blender. It wasn’t until the 1960s that it was put to use in professional kitchens.
