June 2 is National Donut Day! Yes, there is a day just to honor donuts. Although, the celebration is actually much more meaningful than that (not that delicious donuts aren’t meaningful, of course!).

National Donut Day first began in 1938 in Chicago. It was an event created by the Salvation Army as a way to pay homage to their members who handed out donuts to servicemen during World War I. Since that time, donuts have symbolized the caring concern that Salvation Army workers have for Americans in uniform. In fact, World War I soldiers used to refer to the Salvation Army workers as “donut girls” and it was these very soldiers who actually suggested that the Salvation Army workers create a hole in the pastry!

So, now that you know the very interesting story behind donuts in this country, here are some of the places where you can score free (or discounted) donuts on National Donut Day:

Dunkin Donuts is offering a free donut with any beverage purchase. With coffee and donut, you can’t go wrong!

At Shipley Do-Nuts (which has over 250 franchises across six state lines), you can enjoy a free donut. (Make sure you check with your local store to find out the hours they will be offering free donuts, as well as any other stipulations.)

You should also check in with your local donut store or bakery, as they may be offering some deals for National Donut Day as well.
