June 2 is National Donut Day! Yes, there is a day just to honor donuts. Although, the celebration is actually much more meaningful than that (not that delicious donuts aren’t meaningful, of course!).
National Donut Day first began in 1938 in Chicago. It was an event created by the Salvation Army as a way to pay homage to their members who handed out donuts to servicemen during World War I. Since that time, donuts have symbolized the caring concern that Salvation Army workers have for Americans in uniform. In fact, World War I soldiers used to refer to the Salvation Army workers as “donut girls” and it was these very soldiers who actually suggested that the Salvation Army workers create a hole in the pastry!
