It’s official that 138 JCPenney stores are closing their doors in 2017. According to USA Today, the stores will officially close on July 31, and until then, there are liquidation sales going on at each of the closing locations.

This is sad news for the JCPenney employees losing their jobs as well as fans of the department store. But, if you’re looking to get your hands on JCPenney items, you’ve got to take advantage of these deals while you can.

You can reportedly find discounts of up to 40 percent off while the sale lasts. But be wary of markdowns that seem too good to be true.

Finance expert Clark Howard had some advice on his website: “The key is to ignore the signs that say 50% off (or whatever “great discount” is displayed on the sign) and focus on the final price. Use your smartphone to compare prices while you shop to identify the true deals.”

And that’s great to keep in mind when visiting any of the closing locations.

A total of 138 closures are happening across different states reportedly due to competition coming from major online retailers such as Amazon.

JCPenney saw an influx of customers shortly after announcing that it would close 138 stores. They postponed the liquidation sales for a bit, but the closures are still happening.

“Since announcing store closures, affected locations have seen better than expected sales and traffic,” JCPenney spokesman Joey Thomas told USA Today.
