Home Depot recalling more than 190,000 ceiling fans after reports of blades flying off

If you bought a ceiling fan at Home Depot as part of a home improvement project this year, you need to know about a product recall announced on Dec. 23. The distributor of Hampton Bay ceiling fans is recalling more than 190,000 fans that were sold at Home Depot between April and October.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published a voluntary recall from fan distributor King of Fans for the Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara Indoor/Outdoor ceiling fan. According to King of Fans and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 47 people reported incidents of blades flying off the fan while in operation. Two people reported being hit by fan blades, and four reports were made saying the faulty fan blades caused property damage, according to the recall notice.

Four specific Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara fans are included in this recall:

  • Mara Matte Black, Model #51919, UPC 082392519193, SKU 1005 096 031
  • Mara Black, Model #59919, UPC 082392599195, SKU 1004 773 032
  • Mara Matte White, Model #51918, UPC 082392519186, SKU 1005 096 060
  • Mara Polished Nickel, Model #59918, UPC 082392599188

These fans were sold exclusively at Home Depot stores in the U.S. and Canada and online at homedepot.com from April 2020 through October 2020. The retail price of the recalled fans was $150.

In its own recall notice, King of Fans says the fan blades “may detach due to an isolated manufacturing defect with the assembly of the fan blade’s locking clip to the fan flywheel.” This defect causes one of the screws in the locking clip not to secure itself properly to the flywheel, resulting in blade detachment.

King of Fans’ recall notice also indicated the defect does not affect all Mara 54-inch ceiling fans and provided instructions for customers to inspect their fans for potential issues. These directions are available in writing at the bottom of the King of Fans’ recall notice and through a video the company posted on YouTube:

Any customer with a recalled fan should immediately discontinue use of the fan and contact King of Fans by phone toll free at 866-443-1291 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, email them at MaraRecall@kingoffans.com or go to the company’s recall website.
