Hershey’s recalls chocolate shell topping nationwide

If you’ve purchased Hershey’s chocolate shell topping recently, you may want to check your cupboard.

The company is voluntarily recalling 7.25-ounce bottles of Chocolate Shell Topping due to a mistake that resulted in almonds being included in the product. The recall comes after Hershey learned that 1,700 bottles of the plain Chocolate Shell Topping were incorrectly filled with Heath Shell Topping, which is made with almonds.

The recall notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that the bottles containing the Heath topping were shipped nationwide between April 15 and May 3 with the product code 25JSAS1.

The Hershey Company

Hershey’s Chocolate Shell Topping products purchased before April 15, 2021, are not included in the recall and no other Shell Topping flavors or products distributed by Hershey are involved, including the Heath flavor or Hershey’s syrup, which does not harden to form a shell.

While there were no reports of illness or injury at the time of the recall, if someone has an almond allergy and is unaware that the product contains almonds, it could pose a health risk.

If you purchased Hershey’s Chocolate Shell Topping after April 15 with lot code 25JSAS1, you should not consume the product and instead contact Hershey Consumer Relations for a full refund. You can either call them at 1-866-528-6848 Monday through Friday from (9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST) or visit the website to send them an email.

Hershey says the situation is due to an isolated error at a contract manufacturing facility and immediate steps were taken to prevent a recurrence.

If you’ve purchased the product and are now unable to use it, you can make your own magic shell while you wait for your next trip to the grocery store.

As long as you have chocolate chips and coconut oil on hand, this recipe from Love Well Bake Often is easy to whip up in just a few minutes and serves 4-6 people.
