Here’s How You Could Win $25,000 For Your Local Fire Department

Having to call the fire department because there is a fire at your home is not something anyone wants to think about. But the truth is, many of us will indeed need help from our local fire department at some point in our lives.

That’s why it’s important to make sure our fire departments are funded so they can be there for us in the case of an emergency.  (You have fresh batteries in your smoke detector, right? It never hurts to check!)

The UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute recently launched a contest encouraging the public to share an important message about fire safety and, in turn, have a chance to win money for a local fire department.

The Close Before You Doze Video Contest follows a viral video the UL FSRI released last year that shows the dramatic difference a closed door can make during a home fire. A closed door can prevent smoke, carbon monoxide and fire itself from entering a bedroom, which allows for valuable time for you and your family to escape.

Now the UL FSRI is asking the public to share this message by creating videos that educate viewers on the importance of closing bedroom doors before going to sleep.

The contest, open until Aug. 31, asks for creative videos to help spread the message. All qualifying submissions will be published on Close Your Door’s website and the public will vote to determine the top eight finalists. Then, a panel of UL representatives will select the top contestants and the winners will receive a donation in their name for their local fire department or fire department of their choosing.

The grand prize donation will be $25,000, while the runner-up and second runner-up will donate $15,000 and $10,000, respectively. Five additional winners will see $5,000 donated and receive an honorable mention.

“We want this video contest to inspire passionate, creative minds across the country to develop fresh, innovative and memorable ways to deliver the Close Before You Doze message,” Zoe Susice, director of strategy and marketing at UL FSRI, said in a press release. “We’re open to all creative interpretations – if you are a singer, write a song about fire safety and film your performance; if you have graphic design skills, make an animated short; or if you are pet-obsessed, your animal can be the star and tell people to Close Before You Doze.”
