Get paid $20,000 plus free beer to hike the Appalachian Trail

If these past few months of hunkering down at home and binge-watching every Netflix series available has caused you to go a bit stir-crazy, we’ve found an opportunity that may appeal. Devil’s Backbone Brewery is offering both the perfect antidote to cabin fever and a new job all in one with their hunt for a Chief Hiking Officer to hike the Appalachian Trail and drink their beer.

To be clear, the brewery is seeking an experienced hiker who just hasn’t yet crossed off “hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine” on their bucket list.

The short-term gig would begin in the spring of 2021. Devil’s Backbone would fly the hiker to the trail head, outfit them with hiking gear, pay them $20,000 and “throw some big ol’ beer parties along the way,” according to the gig description.

A key requirement of the job includes creating and posting content on the Devils Backbone social channels (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) that documents the Chief Hiking Officer’s adventures on the Appalachian Trail.

Time to dust off your trusty selfie stick!

So, the ideal candidate for this role-of-a-lifetime would be a social media aficionado who is also a rugged adventurer with the experience and stamina to endure the challenges of living outdoors on the Trail — all 2,200 miles of it! — for five to seven months.

Plus, the person to land this gig should obviously have an enthusiasm for craft beer. (Perhaps the easiest job requirement to check off.)

To toss your hat in the ring for this athletic/boozy dream job, you’ll have to create a 1-minute video that shows why you’re the best person for the Chief Hiking Officer role.

Because part of the job entails content creation for the brewery’s social channels, you’ll want to showcase your talent for generating quick, compelling, awesome content for other fans of beer and/or the outdoors.

You’ll also want to prove that you have the physical prowess and survivalist skills required for this adventure.

“Since this is one of the toughest survival experiences of all time, we wouldn’t feel right sending just anyone out there to give it the ol’ college try,” the contest page explains. “Make sure your entry summarizes your hiking and adventure experience.”

There are a few restrictions, and you can find the contest’s official rules here. Of course, the hiker who wins this role must be over 21, and they must also hail from one of these places: Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington D.C. and West Virginia.

Up to 30 finalists will receive a test assignment. The 10 who submit the best assignments become finalists based on criteria such as the ability to create content with limited equipment. Finalists then undergo a background check and interview.

You have until July 31 to submit your epic video. Good luck and happy hiking!
