If you own a 2014-2020 Chevrolet or GMC pickup or SUV, check your VIN number. General Motors has issued a recall for 638,068 Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks from 2014-2018 and Chevrolet and GMC SUVs from 2015-2020 after it was found that one wheel may unintentionally brake, which could lead to a crash.
The recall includes Chevrolet Silverado 1500s, GMC Sierra 1500s and Chevrolet Suburbans and Tahoes and GMC Yukons. Only vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter V8 engine, four-wheel drive and a 3.08-ratio rear axle are included in the recall.
In a document posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, GM says that if a wheel-speed sensor fails while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph when in all-wheel-drive or automatic mode, the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system. If activated, it will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly.
If this occurs, the vehicle’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) malfunction indicator warning lamps will illuminate and the vehicle’s driver information center will display a “Service StabiliTrak” message.
GM will notify owners if their vehicle is involved in the recall, but you can check right now by entering your VIN number on the NHTSA’s website. Dealers will reprogram the EBCM on affected vehicles, free of charge.
The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule, but owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM’s number for the recall is N192261050.
