There is only one thing in the world better than ice cream — free ice cream. And if you have a Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop near you, you can score some free ice cream on this year’s Free Cone Day.

Just head to a participating Ben & Jerry’s on April 9 between noon and 8 p.m. and a free scoop of ice cream is yours. It doesn’t have to be in a cone. If you prefer your ice cream in a cup, order it that way. And you can choose whatever flavor you’d like. Just be prepared for lines — odds are good a lot of people will show up for their free scoop.

Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day began in 1979 as a way to say thank you for the support ice cream fans gave them during their first year of business inside a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont. It wasn’t until 1984 that Free Cone Day began to spread to other locations, with Ben & Jerry’s fans in Saratoga Springs, New York, also getting in on the free treat.

By 1993, all Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops in the United States were handing out free ice cream, and Canada joined the party, with scoop shops all over the world celebrating by 2000. Today, more than a million scoops have been given away.
