If you are using your multi-cooker during the holidays, you might want to stop and check the make and model number. Crock-Pot has issued a voluntary recall of its 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker due to a potential safety hazard.
Crock-Pot has issued the recall on this model because if the lid is not fully locked when a multi-cooker pressurizes, it can detach suddenly. Sunbeam Products, the parent company of the Crock-Pot brand, has received 119 reports of lid detachment causing 99 burn injuries from hot food and liquids. These injuries have ranged in severity from first-degree to third-degree burns.
The recalled cookers are Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers with the model number SCCPPC600-V1. The products were manufactured between July 1, 2017, and Oct. 1, 2018, and sold in retail stores and online at Walmart, Target, Amazon and other retailers between July 2017 and November 2020.
The model number is on a label on the bottom of the unit, and the date codes (K196JN through K365JN and L001JN through L273JN) are engraved on one of the prongs of the electrical plug and the bottom of the base.
If you have a recalled multi-cooker, you should stop using it in pressure-cooker mode immediately and visit the Crock-Pot recall page to request a free replacement lid. Crock-Pot has developed a new lid with design changes that prevent the unit from starting unless the lid is secured. The redesigned lid also has updated instructions to help consumers avoid misusing the multi-cooker to prevent injuries.
The brand has partnered with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an independent government agency charged with protecting the public from risks of injury or death associated with the use of consumer products, to issue the recall. The CPSC says you can still use the cooker for slow cooking and sautéing while waiting for the replacement lid, but you should avoid using it in pressure-cooker mode if possible. If you decide to continue using it until the new lid arrives, the CPSC advises making sure the lid is securely turned to the fully locked position with the arrow on the lid aligned to the base’s lock symbol.
