While wreaths are typically associated with the Christmas season, they can actually be hung up all year round. As they’re essentially just greenery arranged in a donut shape, wreaths are an easy way to adorn front doors and make them look festive and magical. Wreaths can be hung for occasions of any kind, from welcoming new seasons to religious holidays and birthdays or other personal milestones.

There are different styles of wreaths, but most of them, whether real or artificial, start out unadorned. While wreaths with real greenery have a lifespan, wreaths with artificial greenery can be used for an extended period of time — even multiple years. Some wreaths have lights as embellishments, which add a lovely little sparkle to the piece. Of course, with these types of wreaths you will need to ensure there is a power source nearby or that the wreaths are battery-powered.

Wreaths can also be embellished with items such as ribbons, bows, tinsel and bells. Or, they can include natural items such as flowers, pinecones, berries and leaves. Regardless of what kind of materials decorate the wreaths, it’s important to ensure they are suitable for their environment. For example, wreaths hung outdoors should be made with materials that can withstand rain or snow or harsh sun without degrading. The same goes for wreaths that are hung up near a fireplace. You’ll want to make sure none of the materials are flammable.

• Unsure which size wreath to get? It depends on where you are hanging it. If it’s going on an average-sized door, for example, you’ll want to go with a wreath that is between 24 to 30 inches in diameter. For those that will be displayed on a tabletop, you can go with a smaller size. If you’re hanging it on a large wall, you may be able to get away with an even larger one. Be sure to measure the space carefully to determine which size will work best.
• Hanging up a wreath can be challenging, especially when you want to make sure not to damage any walls or door surfaces.
