Our Watering Equipment Buying Guide
There are a few ways to water lawns, gardens and houseplants, and before you make your buying decisions, you’ll need to know which kinds are best for which jobs. For example, you wouldn’t want to bring in an outside hose to water your indoor potted aloe plant.
People who have inground sprinklers with timers don’t have to worry about watering their lawns and garden beds as long as they position the sprinkler heads in the right places. Garden hoses are also necessary, but other kinds of watering equipment help get the job done.
Drip irrigation (also called micro-irrigation) is very efficient because less water gets lost to evaporation. Water runs through tubes or pipes that have small holes in them.
Instead of being sprayed, the H2O slowly drips out onto the ground. You can place these near plant roots or wherever else you like; some connect onto other hose ends, while others can screw right onto hose bibs. A timer is a critical feature of a drip irrigation system, especially if you are away from home often.
Old fashioned watering cans have been redesigned to hold more water, with longer spouts that can get into harder-to-reach areas. Plastic is the most typical material for these cans, as it is rust-resistant and lightweight.
For smaller tasks, choose one with a capacity ranging from 1.5 to 5 liters. If your home garden is on the bigger side, you can get a larger watering can, but naturally, it will be heavier to carry around. Some of these also have detachable heads that you can switch out for different water flows.
Watering stakes are amongst the simplest, most convenient types of plant care equipment. One end is pointed and goes into the ground at a set depth.
Some are refillable, while others are hollow, and you can place a water-filled upside-down bottle inside. The narrow necks work to release the water slowly over time, with the top parts acting as a reservoir. These systems protect plants from drying out in the hot sun and are great to use on vacation.
DWYM Fun Fact
Lazy gardeners appreciate plants that don’t need to be watered that often, and most people know that succulents like cacti fit into this category. These are usually fine with a once-weekly watering, but some need even less than that. Some of these include the ponytail palm (once every few weeks), snake plants (same) and zebra cacti (once a month). Still, with watering equipment like drip irrigation systems and spikes, there’s not much work involved.
The Watering Equipment Tips and Advice
- Oscillating sprinklers are another kind of watering equipment and are great for giving new life to dried-out patches of lawn.
- Watering stakes and drip irrigation systems are suitable for conserving water.
- Plant watering globes are stakes that have their own attached water reservoirs.
- Timers let you decide when the plants will be watered, allowing more control.
