That’s a bag that’s made to be seen at special occasions — especially when it’s decorated with an array of sparkling sequins.

Even though they’re small, there’s no hiding these glittering accessories, so you’ll want to choose your clutch with style foremost in mind. Think about what kind of dress you’ll be wearing it with, especially if you’re choosing something with a lot of color. It doesn’t need to match exactly, although many prom dresses or luxury evening gowns come with a clutch specifically made to complement them. Deep reds are a good fit for many outfits. White or black sequins are a versatile way to shine and still convey a sense of elegance.

Next, think about how you plan to carry your clutch. As the name implies, clutches are traditionally handheld. This ensures that they’re always in view, but you may want to have a hand free occasionally. Some clutches come with a short length of chain that lets them be worn as a wristlet, and that’s a great solution as long as your bag is on the smaller side. If you’re going for a little more convenience, get a clutch that comes with a longer chain. This enables you to wear it as a purse or perhaps even a shoulder bag. Many clutches even come with detachable chains that you can stow in the bag. Just remember that the smaller the clutch, the more space is at a premium.

Again, be fashion-forward no matter which option you choose. The right chain can add a lot to the appeal of a clutch. The wrong one can leave a bad impression in more than one way. In particular, you’ll want to avoid chains with larger links if you’re wearing a sequined dress. (The chains are liable to catch and break off those sequins.)

Finally, don’t forget about the primary practical purpose of a clutch. You need something that will hold all your essentials for the night — and if you consider a full complement of makeup, hairspray, keys and feminine products essential, a clutch might not be the option for you. That said, some well-made bags can pack a surprising amount of cargo. Look for something that has the width for all your biggest items, particularly when it comes to phones. And don’t forget about the clasp! A good clutch has a fastener that keeps all your valuables secure but is easy to snap open with a single hand.

The great thing about sequins is that they won’t get dirty easily. When you have a sequined purse, you’ve basically got a loose layer of plastic or metal over your purse fabric that protects it from everyday dirt and light spills. If you do get a stain that requires attention, your best bet is to address it by targeted cleaning. Mix a solution of cold water and dish detergent and wipe the affected area, then dry thoroughly. If there’s a spill inside the clutch itself or something equally widespread, you may need to fully launder the purse, which you can sometimes do if the sequins are small and secure. Just make sure that you wash on the delicate cycle and put the clutch in a laundry bag to keep the sequins from catching on other items of clothing. From then on, take care of that bag! Most sequined materials don’t hold up well under multiple washings.
