Sectional sofas are the communal focal point of any room. Whether you are shopping for your living room, office or even an outdoor patio, people will always gravitate towards the sectional for relaxation and conversation.

A sectional is a type of sofa made of two or more separate seats joined together. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes; however, you can usually recognize them by their L-shape. Many feature recliners on the ends, while others include a chaise lounge.

It is also common for many sectionals to double as a pull-out bed or include storage below their cushions.

When shopping for a sectional, there are several major factors to consider: the dimensions, your needs and the design. The first priority is size. It is important you choose a sectional that easily fits in the room while leaving enough space to get around.

You also want to consider your needs. Do you need a sectional that doubles as a pull-out bed? Do you have a big family or entertain often, requiring a sectional with enough room for everyone? There are countless sectionals on the market, so finding one that meets all of your needs is a matter of research.

Lastly, consider the sectional’s design and whether it will fit your aesthetic preferences. Of course it’s up to you how you want to decorate your space.

Many sectionals have a minimalist, modern design, making them versatile enough to fit in most spaces. With that being said, you have the freedom to be as wild or conservative as you like. Finding the sectional that best matches your decor is the fun part.

DWYM Fun Fact

The history of the couch can be traced all the way back to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. At the time, a couch was a sturdy wooden bench, nothing like what we’d consider to be a couch today.

When the first sofas as we know them debuted in the 17th and early 18th centuries, they were accompanied by the rise of casual dress, cotton fabrics and reading for pleasure.

A primitive sectional didn’t debut until the Victorian era when people would push together two couches to create more intimate seating.

Decades later, the sectionals we are familiar with hit the markets in the 1930s when Russel Wright designed a modular sofa that could be rearranged.

The Sectional Tips and Advice

  • Make sure you know the room’s dimensions to ensure the sectional comfortably fits.
  • Consider your needs when shopping for a sectional: do you require a pull-out bed or need extra storage?
  • Look for a sectional that compliments the room’s decor so it does not distract.
  • Some fabrics don’t mix well with children or pets, so be sure to take the sectional’s fabric into consideration.
  • Keep in mind how much seating you require.
  • Determine which special features you would like included in your sectional, such as a recliner or chaise.
  • Do you require flexibility? Many sectionals can be taken apart and rearranged to your taste.
  • Look for a comfortable and sturdy sectional so it can last for years.
