No matter how old we get, mothers hold a special place in our hearts. Whether you’re looking to buy her a gift for Mother’s Day or just want to get her a small everyday token of appreciation, a mom pillow is a fun, useful and memorable idea.

And mom pillows aren’t just limited to mothers. Mom-friendly messages can also remind college-aged or adult children about their loved ones. Essentially, a mom pillow is a pillow, decorated with a motherhood-related saying in eye-catching lettering. In some cases, you’re just getting a pillowcase; in others you may get both the pillow and the pillowcase.

When getting a mom pillow, consider its use. For example, will it be a fun accent on a couch or will it be used on a bed? The shape of the pillow will affect this. Decorative square mom pillows are the most common type and can be found in a range of sizes. These are ideal for adding a personal touch to couches, chairs or beds.

Round mom pillows are rare, but they add a nice soothing curved look to any space. If you want to use the mom pillow to rest your arms or back, then it should be in a bolster or lumbar shape. This shape is also a nice addition to a bed or lounger. You can also get bed-sized pillows and pillowcases that can be slept on.

Pay special attention to the fill of the mom pillow, especially if your mother has allergies. Some mom pillows are filled with down, and while this offers long-lasting use, it can cause some people to sneeze and get watery eyes. Luckily, there are synthetic versions of this pillow filler as well. Polyester is a common alternative filling for mom pillows, as it’s strong, durable, soft and cost-effective. Keep in mind that you can end up with lumps inside if they are frequently used, though. Foam filling is good for pillows that provide back support since they are firm and hold their shape better.

You’ll also want to look at the pillow cover. Cotton is one of the most common options for pillow covers because it is easy to wash. This is perfect for households with young kids or pets. Similarly, microfiber is a good option because it is durable and easy to clean. Other options can include velvet for a more formal look or linen for a summery, casual aesthetic. You can also find wool pillowcases for a wintry vibe or faux fur for warm coziness.

DWYM Fun Fact

The advent of throw pillows dates from around the Industrial Revolution, when textile production increased and allowed regular people to have more access to luxurious fabrics. Victorians enjoyed needlepointing what they called “scatter cushions,” and these throws were status symbols because they’d use expensive fabrics and dyes to make designs on them.

Interestingly, no one seems to know for sure why they’re called throw pillows, although some think it’s because of their generally random positions in the home. Others say it’s because people usually throw pillows to others who need one and they’re great for pillow fights. Still others believe the term is meant to be a corollary to the throw blanket.

More people now consider throw pillows nuisances and extra clutter, something unfavorable in the Marie Kondo age. However, they remain an easy way to add a touch of personality to a space in a way that’s still useful and comfortable.

The Tips and Advice

  • The writing on the mom pillow is arguably the most interesting part. You can get short sayings such as “Call mom” or “You are loved” in addition to longer phrases that include poetry and words of affection. The style of lettering also helps to convey the sentiment. Bold, modern letters have more informal look while delicate cursive writing looks more traditional.
  • When buying a mom pillow, pay special attention to maintenance and care. After all, you don’t want to have mom spot-cleaning every little stain. Try to find a mom pillow that is machine-washable for ease and convenience. This way, you won’t need to worry about spills and stains.
  • Not sure a mom pillow is enough? Consider bundling it with a cozy blanket that matches. You could also add in specialty teas or coffees to round out the gift. That way, mom can get comfortable while appreciating the thoughtful present.
  • How does a mom pillow work with existing décor? If there are no other pillows with writing on them, the mom pillow will probably stand out already. Some mom pillows are black and white, which works with pretty much any aesthetic. Or, you can choose something you know will work with your mother’s preferred aesthetic.
