A real leather jacket is a classic wardrobe staple, but the best-made ones can cost hundreds of dollars. These days, you can find faux leather jackets made from polyurethane that look just like the authentic thing for less than half the price. They won’t have the same soft feel as the real thing, but you should buy what you can best afford.
The bomber style is one of the most popular and is waist-length with a ribbed, gathered waistband and cuffs. These usually have zippers on the fronts and at least four functional pockets on the sides and tops; the collars can be flat and round or similar to a shirt collar.
Leather and faux leather blazers look like suit jackets but don’t come with perfectly matched pants. They are more formal than bombers but less so than wearing a suit. They have lapels in the front and button closures and usually have two front pockets. A more contemporary style is the stand-up collar which does what it says; it stands up against the neck. You’ll often see this style on slimmer-fit faux leather jackets, providing a sleek, modern look.
These jackets can also have detailing like epaulets on the shoulders, extra hidden pockets, quilting and additional ribbing; some also come with removable hoods that you can take off. If you’re looking for warmth, shop for fully lined ones with fleece or sherpa.
Some jackets will have removable linings, which is an excellent feature. Some faux leather jackets are strong and durable enough to wear when riding motorcycles, and since they’re not made from real leather, they’re waterproof and won’t stain as easily.

DWYM Fun Fact
Bomber jackets came into vogue during the first World War when most airplanes didn’t have enclosed cockpits. The need for warm, durable jackets was high, and so the U.S. Army and the Aviation Clothing Board provided what was needed. The first bomber jackets were lined with real fur.
In World War II, a new bomber lined with sheepskin was introduced. This outerwear was essential for the military but so well styled that civilians soon started wearing them. They were trendy in Europe from the 1960s through the 1980s and are still worn worldwide.
The Tips and Advice
- When buying faux leather, look for ones with grainy textures; they look more natural.
- Pieces that mix faux leather and other materials also look more like the real thing.
- Don’t buy leather or faux leather jacket if it’s too tight because that will make it look cheap.
- It’s easier to fake black, white, red and metallic leather; faux brown doesn’t always look as natural.
- Always read the sizing guides on the product descriptions and see if there are size charts and customer reviews.
- Use leather conditioner on faux and real leather jackets to keep them soft and supple.
