Buying Guide

Many people only buy sunglasses to look cool, but the true purpose for wearing them is eye protection from UV rays. They should help minimize brightness throughout the year whenever the sun is out since the reflective rays can impact the eyes and vision.

Ultraviolet (UV) rays are radiation energy produced by the sun and include two kinds: UVA and UVB. The latter is thought to cause the most damage to eye surface tissues, lenses and corneas. This damage can lead to macular degeneration, cataracts, and other conditions that negatively impact vision.

Look for sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection; this is also shown as UV 400. Remember that darker lenses don’t always offer more safety, either. Polarized lenses don’t offer UV protection, but they reduce the glare that bounces off reflective surfaces like roads and water.

These offer better visual experiences for activities like golfing and boating, so choose polarized lenses that include 100% UVA and UVB protection for the most safety and best vision.

Some of the main frame shapes for sunglasses are round, aviator, square, Wayfarer and wraparound. That last one is best for sports and driving; it curves around the face and provides additional vision protection on the sides. Although cat’s eye and small, round shapes go in and out of style, squarish frames with rounded edges and wraparounds seem to be here to stay.

You’ll see that many of the product descriptions for sunglasses include measurements for lens width, lens height, bridge of the nose and frame arms. If you don’t have this information available, you can measure the distance between your temples.

Look in a mirror, and line up a straight ruler in front of your face. Measure the distance from one temple to another; that’s the best frame size. As a guideline, a 49mm frame fits a 115mm face size and a 61mm frame size fits a 152mm face.

What to Look For

  • You can buy inexpensive, non-prescription sunglasses for less than $10, but always make sure they have UV protection.
  • Some UV lenses are not polarized; read the product descriptions carefully.
  • Never wear sunglasses over a pair of prescription glasses unless they are specifically made to fit over them. Otherwise, you’ll scratch the prescription lenses.
  • Remember to put your sunglasses in a pouch or case; never leave them sitting with the lenses facing down.

Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer sunglasses have been around for a long time and never seem to go out of style. Tom Cruise wore them in the movie Risky Business (1983), and the oversized, dark shades reflected his character’s rebellious, confident personality.

The shades worked their way into popular culture and started selling like hotcakes. For years following the movie’s release, Ray-Ban sold 1.5 million pairs of Wayfarers every year. Cruise also wore a pair of Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses in Top Gun three years later.
