Some people have a multi-step make-up routine that takes half an hour while others simply put on sunscreen and are good to go. Whether you’re a makeup aficionado or use it just on special occasions, you probably know there is nothing as annoying as having your hair get in the way when you’re carefully trying to apply eyeliner or blend in your foundation. A functional yet cute makeup headband is the ideal solution for keeping your hair out of your face while ensuring it stays perfectly styled.

How is a makeup headband different from a regular headband? It’s all in the design and material. Makeup headbands are made to secure all of your hair back from your face and neck, so they are thicker and stronger than a regular hairband, which is mostly for aesthetics. Makeup headbands are often made from a terry cloth or microfiber material which is soft and stretchy – and machine washable – so the fabric is easy to wear and easy to clean. An effective makeup headband can ensure your hair doesn’t get in your face or covered with makeup

There are three main styles of makeup headbands. One style looks similar to a regular headband, but is thicker and covered in a plush terry cloth material. You wear it by placing it up on your forehead like a regular headband. This is good for those who have short hair. Another style is a long terry cloth strip with Velcro on the ends. You wear this by placing the strip at your neck and securing the ends on your forehead. This style works great for long hair or curly hair. Lastly, another style of headband is circular in shape, made from a plush material surrounding a plastic hoop. You wear this by slipping it over your head to your neck, and then bringing one end up over your forehead. This style works well for medium to long hair.

DWYM Fun Fact

You may be thinking – why not just tie your hair back instead of wearing a special headband when doing your makeup? While that may work for some people, it doesn’t work for everybody. If you have bangs, for example, you can’t simply tie them back to get them out of your face. Similarly, those with curly hair may not want to tie up their hair as that may ruin their curl pattern. Plus, those who have already styled their hair may not want to tie up their hair as that could undo the work they already done to make their hair look as they want.

The Makeup Headband Tips and Advice

  • One of the most important things to look for in a makeup headband is the material because it should be easy to wash and dry. When you’re wearing the headband while doing your makeup, it’s more than likely that some products may get on your headband. When it’s time to clean it, opt for one that is machine washable and dryer friendly, which is the easiest and most convenient way to clean. Some are machine washable but need to be laid flat to dry, while others are hand-wash only.
  • Makeup headbands are a functional accessory, but there’s no rule saying they can’t be fashionable too. After all, looking cute while doing your makeup just adds another layer of fun. You can find makeup headbands in beautiful colors and patterns to match your style, as well as those that have fun features like bunny ears or cat ears.
  • While it’s called a makeup headband, you can use it for a lot more than that. It can also be used to keep your hair out of your face while you do your daily skincare routine. Some people also wear the makeup headband while taking a shower or while doing hot yoga – both activities where there is a lot of humidity that can make your hair go frizzy. The absorbing qualities of the makeup headband help to keep that at bay.
