If you wear pants or jeans with belt loops, you may see a belt as a necessary fashion item. But belts still do serve a function. If your pants are too loose, belts can help you tighten the fit. Since belts have holes that allow you to choose the exact size, they can bring a customizability to your wardrobe.

But there are some important considerations when choosing a belt. One that’s too tight might not only cause discomfort, but it can also lead to health issues. A too-tight belt can cause numbness and compression in the groin area. Too much compression can even lead to a condition called meralgia paresthetica, which presents as a burning sensation in your thigh.

There are different types of belts, though, so it’s important to know the clothing items you’ll be pairing them with along with the occasions when you’ll be wearing your belt. For more formal occasions, you’ll need one in either a brown or black color, with a strap width of about 1.5 inches. The strap should be sleek and slim, and the buckle should feature a flat design with either a silver or gold finish.

Casual belts have more flexibility. They’re typically wider, but 1.5 inches can work for your casual occasions, as well. It’s important to make sure that whatever belt width you choose, it will fit inside your belt loops. The material might be more rugged, and it can be made from a wide variety of materials, including leather. It also will typically have a larger buckle, and that buckle can come in a variety of looks, including the ratchet-style belt that’s easy to put on and take off. You aren’t limited to brown or black with a more casual belt, either, and you may even opt for a lighter brown, especially if you’re wearing it with jeans.

• Chances are, your belt will need the occasional cleaning. You can wipe your belt to clean it, but if it’s made from leather, make sure you only use leather-friendly products. Some leather belts are marked “dry clean only.” Before you take your leather belt to a dry cleaner, check to make sure they will be able to safely clean your leather without damaging it.
• The buckle on a belt is as important as the strap. You’ll want one that looks great while also being easy to fasten and durable. The finish is important not just for appearance’s sake, but also for how well it will hold up under the rigors of regular use.
• Sizes on men’s belts can be deceiving. Generally speaking, you’ll want to add two inches to your pants size. For size 34 pants, choose a Size 36 belt.
• If you find a belt that works perfectly for you, check to see if it’s available in multiple colors. You might be able to stock your wardrobe with your favorite, most comfortable belt.
• A belt can be a great gift for that person on your list that’s hard to buy for. Some come with gift boxes custom made for the belt you’ve chosen, which can take the work out of trying to find the right box.
• Some belts allow you to remove the buckle and cut the strap to length. This can be great for ensuring that your belt adjusts with you over the years you own it.
• Size availability can be limited with some belts. Make sure to check that first before getting attached to a belt. You might also find that a belt with limited sizing is available in sizes that fall outside of that, but sold in a different listing.
