Our Insulated Curtain Buying Guide
Regular curtains have one layer of fabric that allows light to filter into rooms. However, anyone who has problems sleeping when the light gets in — and would like their rooms a bit warmer — will appreciate having insulated thermal curtains on their windows.
Blackout curtains exist and often have several layers that are designed to keep rooms darker. However, there’s extra utility in insulated curtains, which are designed with thermal qualities, including coated foam layers, to decrease heat loss from windows. These curtains are also designed to reduce sound and block light, so they often have similar features to blackout curtains.
Insulated curtain fabric is usually made from polyester or polyester/cotton blends, and a heavy microfiber is also great for keeping out the light. Look for curtains made with triple-weave technology, which can block up to 90% of light. These curtains can muffle noise and keep the temperature in rooms balanced. Keep them closed to shut out the heat and cold, and your home will feel much more comfortable.
Polyester curtains are not expensive, but larger-sized ones will cost you more. The ones here all have grommets, which work with standard-sized curtain rods. These styles are effortless to install if you already have a curtain rod up; otherwise, you’ll have to put one up first. The grommets should side right onto it.
If you prefer some privacy, temperature control and light filtration even when your curtains are open, install a transparent or semi-transparent sheer behind the blackout curtain close to the window. You may need to install a second curtain rod, though.
DWYM Fun Fact
The saying “It’s curtains for you!” indicates that someone will experience an unfortunate end, like going to jail; it can even mean that someone plans to kill you. It basically indicates a finality, such as going to jail. The saying was popularized in gangster moves from the 1920s and 1930s and refers to the final stage direction in many plays. A script may simply say “Curtain” to indicate that an act has ended.
A famous Bugs Bunny short cartoon from 1946 entitled “Racketeer Rabbit” featured Bugs and a gangster named Rocky, drawn as a caricature of actor Edward G. Robinson (who often often played gangsters in movies). In this cartoon, Bugs announces: “It’s curtains for you, Rocky. Curtains, you understand?” — and then puts a curtain rod, complete with green and white-spotted fabric, over the gangster’s shoulders. “Aww, they’re adorable,” Rocky says.
The Insulated Curtain Tips and Advice
- Insulated curtains are perfect for nappers and people who like to sleep late. They also work well for home offices.
- These curtains also prevent your air conditioning and heat from escaping out the windows; you can lose up to 25% of your home’s heat in this way.
- Insulated blinds are another option and can be less expensive than curtains. They also take up less space, but your color, size and design options may be more limited.
- Insulated blackout curtains can also shield furniture and artwork from sun damage.
- Polyester curtains are easy to care for; most can be machine-washed, but read the product descriptions and labels first.
