Whether you’re an everyday golfer or a casual player, you’ll always need a good golf towel. These towels are essential for hot days out on the course and serve a number of important purposes for golfers.

Players often use them to clean their club faces, wash golf balls or dry their sweaty hands to get a better grip. There are a few things to consider when looking for the right golf towel for yourself or the golfer in your life.

First, consider the fabric you would most benefit from. Golf towels come in a variety of materials, with the most popular option being microfiber. Microfiber is a good choice because it can be used wet or dry, plus it picks up dirt and leaves no lint behind. This fabric makes it perfect for using on a ball you’re about to putt or a club you’re about to use for removing any mud that’s gotten stuck to them.

Next, think about how often you’ll be using your golf towels. If you’re an occasional golfer, you may not use yours as often as the player who is on the green daily. Look for sturdy towels that can withstand being used often and are easily machine washable if you think yours will see heavy use. Remember to remove the often-attached carabiner before washing!

• You can use your golf towel to practice your swing using what’s called the towel drill. Fold your towel and tuck it under your right arm (or left, if you play left-handed) and make a backswing without it falling. This simple drill can help keep your swing motion tight using only a towel.
• Your grip determines the rest of your game. Make sure you use your towel to dry your hands as often as needed to keep the club from slipping. You might as well do it each time you reach into your bag for your next club since it’s hanging right there!
• Carry an extra golf towel to wipe the sweat off your brow when playing. A smaller, pocket-size towel can be great for wiping off your ball on the green before a putt — after you’ve marked the ball, of course.
• Remember to remove the carabiner before washing! If that’s too much to remember, try looking for a golf towel that’s built with a hole in the middle so it can drape over one of your clubs and not fall off during a round.
• Look for towels that can easily fit in your bag, clip onto the side or hang over a club. You can also stick it into the basket on the golf cart if you prefer.
