If you’ve ever had a bagel-related injury, then you know how difficult it can be to actually slice a bagel. Often, people end up with cuts on their fingers and palms when attempting to slice the delicious bread with a knife because it’s a dense texture and uneven shape. However, it’s hard to enjoy a bagel unless you slice it in half and spread your favorite toppings on it – so it’s something you need to do. If you do happen to slice a bagel with a knife unscathed, it’s likely you smash the bagel while attempting to hold it in place. With a bagel slicer, however, you don’t end up with these sorts of issues.

A bagel slicer is a small and handy kitchen gadget that is designed to slice bagels evenly and safely. It has a vertical stand for the bagel, with a guillotine-like cutting edge which you move from the top down, cutting the bagel in half. It’s safe to use as your hands and fingers don’t have direct contact with the blade. Plus, the stand that holds the bagel prevents your hands from squeezing and squishing the bread during slicing.

When you’re looking for a bagel slicer, one of the most important factors to consider is the quality of the cutting edge. After all, this is the most important part of the gadget. In order to get a smooth cut, the blade needs to be serrated in order to slice through the dense bagel. Bagel slicers which have smooth blades don’t tend to cut as well as their serrated counterparts.

DWYM Fun Fact

Where did the bagel originate? There are many different versions of a round bread with a hole in them across the world, but the bagel that we refer to here likely originated in Poland in the 1600s. The 1683 Battle of Vienna, during which King Jan Sobieski was the first king to decide that white bread could be made by those not in the Krakow baker’s guild, is the start of the boiled and baked treat. The king’s decree meant that Jews could bake their breads within the city. When the king saved Austria from Turkish invaders, a Jewish baker made a special roll to celebrate the king. This bread was shaped like a stirrup and called a beugel (which means stirrup in Austrian). The beugel is the predecessor of the bagel.

The Bagel Slicer Tips and Advice

  • The blades for bagel slicers are typically made from stainless steel because it is a hardy and durable material. The body of the gadget can be made from steel as well, but other varieties are made from plastic or rubberwood. If you’re interested in a sturdy gadget, then a stainless steel body is the way to go. Plastic bodies are less durable, but they are lightweight and easy to carry. Rubberwood has a more aesthetic appeal but is not as strong as stainless steel.
  • Be sure to check the slot thickness of the bagel slicer to determine whether it will accommodate the type of bagels you like. Some bagels are half and inch thin while others can be two inches thick – so check to see whether the bagel slicer’s slot will work for you. This is especially important if you want the flexibility to cut other types of breads as well, such as loaves or muffins. Many bagel slicers come with internal clamps which help you keep the bagel in place when you’re slicing, which is handy when there is a wide slot. Some bagel slicers have slot dividers, which enable you to change the thickness of the slot to accommodate bagels of different thicknesses.
  • In order to keep the product in place, especially when you’re slicing, it’s important to get a bagel slicer which has rubber feed. These provide good traction and keep the gadget from sliding around. After all, you don’t want to end up with a bagel slicer slipping out from under your hands while you’re bringing down the blade.
