Isn’t it crazy to think that the first cars did not have rearview mirrors? And believe it or not, the first rearview mirror was not designed with safety as a priority. It was invented by Indy race car driver Ray Harroun in 1911.
At the time, race cars had two drivers instead of one; the second, or ancillary rider was a mechanic who told the driver what was in back of them. Harroun won his race using the first rearview mirror, and soon after that they started appearing in passenger cars.
