If you’re like me, you’ve always been bad about getting the water intake you need. Water’s just … so boring. It doesn’t taste like anything. And who has the time and energy to keep track of how much you drink? Not me. As of last fall, though, that’s no longer a problem for me, thanks to an inexpensive item I brought on a whim from Amazon.

As you probably know, water is important for health. Our bodies are made up of 60% water. Water lubricates our joints, helps us eliminate waste, controls our temperature and gives us energy. It also protects our spinal cord and other tissues. On top of that, water is good for weight control compared to sodas and sugary drinks. It may also help your skin feel less dry and flush out toxins in your body, although other benefits to skin are not scientifically proven.

The right amount of water varies for individuals, based on factors such as activity level, health level and environment. But one common recommendation is that everyone should drink about eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. I’m sure you’ve heard it.

While the New York Times has debunked the advice, saying there’s no scientific research behind it and that its source was probably a 1945 Food and Nutrition Board recommendation taken slightly out of context, the Mayo Clinic says the suggestion to drink eight glasses of water a day is nonetheless easy to remember and can be a healthy goal.

Given that, the CDC offers tips on how to up your intake, such as adding a wedge of lime or lemon to your water or carrying a bottle with you wherever you go. Still, none of that worked for me until I bought this on Amazon: The COSCOD Motivational Water Bottle with Time Marker Tracker for $6.88.

It’s a simple product that works because of a simple trick: lines and times of day are marked every eight ounces on a 32-ounce bottle. Fill the bottle up twice a day starting early in the morning and you’ll have your daily recommendation of water by 6 p.m. daily. When you’ve emptied it two times, you can rest assured that you’re getting all the benefits of being properly hydrated.

Despite its low price point, I’ve found this product to be leakproof and pretty durable, but to be fair I work from home and don’t take it places with me. The lettering hasn’t rubbed off at all, though, and I like the clear frosted walls that look cool but still allow me to see the water level inside. When I bought it, there was another design available, and the version I purchased was a Harry Potter-themed version with the word “Aguamenti” on one side and the time tracker on the other. I don’t like the current design as much, but the “Squeeze the day” message is pretty cute!

I’m not the only fan; the COSTCOD water bottle has a 4.5 out of 5-star review average from 55 customers. Reviewer Ritz noted that their husband needed to drink more water for a potential kidney stone problem and the bottle helped him learn to drink more water on time.

“And even his skin and hair looks had improved as water is really very important,” Ritz said. “Definitely a recommendation for everyone who would like to improve their health and wants to consume more water and keep track of it.”

I love it. I take it to work and the gym with me,” one anonymous reviewer noted. “The strap makes it easy to carry and I love the design of it. I also like that it helps me keep up with my water intake for the day. Most times I’m so busy with work, that I forget to drink any water at all. This lets me see where I’m at for the day.”

The bottle comes with an infuser and fits in most car cup holders. However, if you want to check out other options, Amazon has plenty of additional time-tracker water bottles available in different sizes, designs and price points, including a QuiFit version that holds up to a gallon of water and offers motivational messages alongside each time marker, as well as a sporty bottle from Three Drops of Life that’s totally clear.

For me, the product has been a game-changer, as I now feel pretty well hydrated most of the time. I’m ready for my Zumba workouts and I feel less tired and cranky throughout the drier fall and winter days. I drink less soda and probably eat a touch less, too, although I haven’t quantified that.

If you’re looking for something convenient and cheap ($7!) that’ll make a big difference in your life, try this out. And if one of your New Year’s resolutions is to drink more water, why not opt for some easy assistance?

Happy shopping!
